A surprisingly common question — and the short answer is that GST registration is free. The Government of India charges no application fee on the GST portal. What costs money is the time, documents and professional help it takes to get it right. Here's the full picture for 2026.
The official fee is zero
Applying for GST registration on www.gst.gov.in is completely free — there is no government fee for a new registration, and you will never be asked to pay the department for the certificate. If anyone demands a "registration fee" to the government, it is not official.
What you may pay for is professional help. Getting the application right matters: the wrong business constitution, missing bank details or a mismatched address can delay the certificate or trigger a site visit. Typical professional fees in India for preparing and filing a GST application are:
| Business type | Typical professional fee |
|---|---|
| Sole proprietorship / individual | ₹500 – ₹3,000 |
| Partnership firm / LLP | ₹2,000 – ₹5,000 |
| Private limited company | ₹4,000 – ₹10,000 |
Do you even need to register? The thresholds
Registration is mandatory once your annual aggregate turnover crosses the threshold for your state and your type of supply:
| Category | General states | Special category states (incl. Manipur, Mizoram) |
|---|---|---|
| Goods only | ₹40 lakh* | ₹20 lakh |
| Services (or mixed) | ₹20 lakh | ₹20 lakh |
*The ₹40 lakh goods threshold applies only to businesses that do not supply the notified restricted goods and do not make inter-state taxable supplies. Special category states (including Manipur and Mizoram) keep the ₹20 lakh limit for goods, and the services limit there was aligned to ₹20 lakh from April 2019.
Some businesses must register regardless of turnover: those making inter-state taxable supplies, sellers on e-commerce marketplaces, casual or non-resident taxable persons, people liable under reverse charge, input service distributors, and anyone required to deduct TDS or collect TCS under GST.
What you need to apply
- PAN of the business (and of partners/directors for firms and companies)
- Aadhaar of the promoter(s) for e-KYC
- Bank details — account number, IFSC, cancelled cheque
- Proof of business address — electricity bill, rent agreement or property documents
- Photographs of the promoter(s), plus business constitution documents (partnership deed, incorporation certificate, etc.)
Once submitted, the GST officer verifies the application and, unless a physical verification is ordered, the registration certificate is issued within 7 working days.
