Udyam (MSME) registration: benefits and how to apply in 2026

Updated 11 August 2026 · 5 min read

Most small businesses in Manipur never register as MSMEs — and leave real money on the table. Udyam registration is free, done entirely online, and the same certificate unlocks lower borrowing costs, subsidy schemes and legal protection against customers who pay late. Here's what it is and how to get it.

    What Udyam registration is

Udyam is the government's single online registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, run on udyam.gov.in. It replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar, and a single Aadhaar-linked registration covers your whole business — no renewal needed, and it is valid as long as the enterprise operates.

The classification is now based on both investment in plant & machinery or equipment, and turnover:

    CategoryInvestment limitTurnover limit
MicroUp to ₹1 croreUp to ₹5 crore
SmallUp to ₹10 croreUp to ₹50 crore
MediumUp to ₹50 croreUp to ₹250 crore

    The benefits that matter

    • Collateral-free loans: under CGTMSE, MSMEs can get loans up to ₹5 crore (₹2 crore per borrowing unit) without collateral security.
    • Priority sector lending: banks treat MSME advances as priority sector, which improves your access to credit at reasonable rates.
    • Late-payment protection: the MSME Development Act entitles you to interest at three times the bank rate when a buyer pays late — and buyers must report outstanding dues annually.
    • Government tenders: many public procurement contracts reserve a share for MSMEs, with fee and earnest-money concessions.
    • Subsidies and schemes: eligibility for interest subsidies, technology and marketing support schemes, and state-level incentives that vary by state.

How to apply (it takes minutes)

    1. Go to udyam.gov.in and choose "For New Enterprise" registration.
    2. Enter your Aadhaar number and the name as printed on Aadhaar, then verify with the OTP.
    3. Fill in the business details — PAN, GSTIN (if any), activity, location, investment and turnover.
    4. Submit — the Udyam Registration Certificate is generated instantly, with your Udyam Registration Number (URN).

Registration is completely free. Beware of agencies charging to "file" it for you — the official portal is self-service. A note for Manipur businesses: if your state runs additional MSME incentive schemes (interest subsidy, power subsidy, capital subsidy), the Udyam certificate is the entry ticket, so keep the PDF safe and handy.
